Welcome

patricia thomson

Welcome to the “Glasgow Study Day” 2021. This event has been planned since mid 2019 and is only happening today because of the hard work and dedication of our Event Organisers, Patricia de Vries and Andrew Miller, and of course our amazing Committee. Can we thank NES (NHS Education Scotland) and Glasgow Dental School for their continued support and collaboration with the community of general dental practice in the West of Scotland in the staging of this event. On that note, we would like to take this opportunity to wish Professor Jeremy Bagg sincere best wishes for his future ventures, and record the gratitude of FGDP West of Scotland for his constant support over many years.

Now that we are able to meet in person again, we are delighted to host all members of the dental team, including many loyal members of the trade, and especially BDS5 and VDPs from the West of Scotland.

We are cognisant of the difficulties faced by all our colleagues over the past 20 months and hope that, by bringing the profession together, we can help lift the spirits of our friends and acquaintances.

As always, we have managed to attract world-class speakers and today is no exception; we are delighted to welcome Iain Chapple, Carol Tait and Steve Bonsor.

Please take time to visit our colleagues from the Dental Trades, many of whom have supported us for decades.

Some of you will realise that the FGDP has now evolved into the College of General Dentistry; a new College and home for all members of the dental team. Although in its infancy, we are confident that the College will grow quickly and will serve and support the general dental practice community in the years ahead.

Whether you are joining us in person or virtually, we hope that you enjoy your day and find the experience enriching.

Welcome from our President

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Scottish Study Day delivered by CGDent Scotland in affiliation with The College of General Dentistry. I am thrilled to be present at this face-to-face College Study Day.

Members and Fellows of the FGDP(UK) have now transferred their memberships to CGDent and we continue to grow our membership from across all dental professional groups. Our hard-working staff, led by Chief Executive Simon Thornton-Wood, and members of the College Council have been working to fulfil the goals and purpose of the College.

We will soon be launching our Career Pathways and Certified Membership Scheme, for which Professor Avi Banerjee chairs the Working Group. We plan to provide a pathway for the professional development of all dental professionals working in primary care from the time of registration through to acquisition of enhanced skills, with the support of College facilitators. The role of regional CGDent affiliate groups will be crucial in rolling out this unique programme and supporting colleagues who take part.

The FGDP(UK) guidelines and standards have come under the ownership of CGDent and we will continue to update them. We will be soon releasing Mentoring Guidelines in Implant Dentistry, which has been developed with the ADI.

Please can I remind members they have free access to Prodental CPD’s suite of on-line educational material. The College will also be providing regular webinars on their platform on a variety of topics.

I hope you all enjoy the day, and congratulations to the organisers.
