Welcome

patricia-thomson-committee-member

On behalf of our committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you all to Glasgow Science Centre to enjoy a day of quality CPD and participate in our community of practice.

We particularly recognise those who have loyally attended our Annual Study Day over many years, and have helped this become a staple of the Scottish Dental CPD calendar. We warmly welcome you, and all members of the dental team.

This year, in accordance with the evolution of FGDP West of Scotland to CGDent Scotland, we are delighted to welcome VDPs from the North, South, East and West of Scotland. We hope that you will be inspired, and trust that we will host you at many Study Days in the future.

We are also joined by BDS5 students from Glasgow Dental School. Welcome to all of you, and we hope you have an enjoyable, informative and inspiring day.

We thank NES (NHS Education for Scotland) and Glasgow Dental School for their continued support and collaboration with the community of general dental practice in Scotland in the staging of this event.

It is also important to recognise the Dental Trade and the various organisations that have helped us through sponsorship, as without them, we could not realise our ambitions for the scale of the day. Thank you to all of you for your ongoing support. We urge delegates to spend time visiting them in the exhibition hall throughout the day.

Can I also take this opportunity to thank Patricia de Vries for her continued hard work and tireless efforts as CGDent Scotland’s Events Coordinator.

Our main speakers today are Professor Subir Banerji and Professor Shamir Mehta, who will be guiding us through the tricky and ubiquitous problem of tooth wear. We will finish the day with the Caldwell Memorial Lecture delivered by our own home grown Public Health Media Star, Professor Jason Leitch, who will use his superior communication skills and inside knowledge to discuss our experience and recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

CGDent Scotland exists as an educational organisation with Affiliation to the College of General Dentistry UK. The College has aspirations towards Royal Chartership as this would grant Dentistry the voice, influence and status enjoyed by other branches of Medicine. It is partly by growing in membership that the College can demonstrate that it truly represents the profession, and Royal Chartership can hopefully be obtained. Throughout the day we will display the QR code to take you to the CGDent website, where you can join the College. Please consider doing so, as we look forward to supporting you as you develop your career pathway in Dentistry.

Whether you are joining us in person, or online, we hope you have a fantastic day, and leave with a renewed enthusiasm for your profession.

Caldwell memorial lecture

Robert Craig Caldwell

It is an honour for CGDent Scotland to be associated with a figure of the stature of Robert Craig Caldwell. Every year our final session at the Scotland Study Day is dedicated to his memory and since 2016 we have been joined by the Glasgow Dental Alumnus Association, the body which established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture.

Born in the United States but raised in Millport, Bob graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1950 and embarked on a career in dentistry that saw him return to America, initially to the Universities of Rochester and Alabama, and ultimately to California, as Dean of the School of Dentistry at UCLA. In post, he was not an ostentatious or flamboyant leader but devoted himself to ideals which he epitomised: clinical excellence and kindness in personal relationships. He encouraged the recruitment of minority and female students so that all segments of the population could be represented in the student body. In addition, he encouraged students to seek advanced training and considered all students to be his junior colleagues, understanding with great skill that in the near future his undergraduates would soon become his peers. In 1972, after just 3 years in post, Bob died aged 44 of chronic myeloid leukaemia.

His classmates at the University of Glasgow established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture and set up a trust to ensure that world-renowned speakers could be brought to Glasgow.

The event will close with the Caldwell Memorial Lecture given this year by Jason Leitch

"Recovering from a Pandemic"- NHS Scotland's legacy post Covid.

Pandemics have swept across the globe many times but what made COVID-19 different was how leaders communicated urgent public health advice. In Scotland, Professor Jason Leitch, the National Clinical Director, was regularly on the podium with former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, to address the nation about the virus and how to stay safe. Jason also used his profile on Twitter as well as the established media (radio, television and print) to educate people about COVID-19 and the terminology being used by health leaders.

In this presentation, Recovering from a Pandemic: NHS Scotland’s legacy post-COVID, Jason reflects on the lessons that were learned, especially around effective mass communication. He was at the forefront of communicating difficult decisions to an array of competing stakeholders, including NHS Boards and clinical staff, the business community, local authorities, educators, faith leaders and a diverse and geographically disparate population. He admits that not all public health advice was popular but his perspective shines a light on the tightrope leaders walked during the pandemic and how the lessons that were learned have left a lasting legacy for Scotland.

Aims:

  • To give insight into how Scotland’s leaders effectively communicated public health guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • To reflect on the lessons learned in how to use mass communication for health messaging.
  • To learn about where NHS Scotland did well and where it could have done better with public health communication during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outcomes:

  • Through hearing about real life examples, from one of the key people leading the fight against COVID-19, participants will understand how to approach communication for a geographically disparate and socially diverse audience to achieve maximum impact.
  • Participants will learn how an understanding of the political, economic and social context ahead of communicating to a mass audience is fundamental to success.
  • Participants will learn how the urgency of the pandemic brought into sharp focus the importance of having direct and clear messages that are conveyed on relevant platforms to well-identified audiences.
