Welcome
I am delighted to welcome you all to Glasgow Science Centre for a day of quality CPD. Our delegates comprise of GDPs of all levels of experience, hospital dentists, hygienists, therapists, VDPs from all over Scotland, the dental trade, final year students from Glasgow and Dundee, and various dental organisations.
The College of General Dentistry UK was founded to serve the entire dental team, and although CGDent Scotland operates as an independent organisation, we fully support this aspiration. It is very gratifying to welcome a significant number of hygienists and therapists to join us today. Although we cannot always select topics that will appeal across the wider team, we are keen to offer an inclusive environment, and hope that our study days will continue to attract a cross section of the dental workforce.
When we were considering the topic for today we felt that it was time to revisit periodontics. Whether you enjoy this branch of dentistry or not, it is essential that we engage with it and have cognisance of the most recent guidance.
Luckily we have managed to secure Ian Dunn as the speaker. Not only was Ian instrumental in the production of the BSP S3 and SDCEP guidance, but he is also a gifted and enthusiastic speaker with the ability to make his subject accessible. You may surprise yourself by being more passionate about perio by the time you leave us today.
We are also privileged to be joined by Professor Jim McCaul, eminent consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon at The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. He will present the Caldwell Memorial Lecture on oral cancer.
We thank both speakers for taking time out from their busy academic and clinical schedules to be with us.
Our continued thanks to the dental trade for their loyal and continued support which allows us to deliver this day in its present format, keeping the delegate cost as low as possible. Please visit the various stands in the exhibitors hall to have a chat with them and express our gratitude.
We particularly wish to thank Patricia de Vries for all her hard work in putting this event together. Planning starts a year and a half in advance, and Patricia barely has a moment to prepare her family Christmas as the pressure mounts in the weeks leading to the event. Many thanks Patricia, and you can start your Christmas preparations tomorrow!
Thanks are also due to Professor Aileen Bell at Glasgow Dental School for allowing the attendance of final year students and a number of fourth year students who have been helping as marshals. The continued support of NES is also valued, as well as the various dental organisations who are with us. We feel that the presence of these groups ensure that we represent a large section of the dental industry, and allow delegates to have dialogue with organisations that might otherwise appear distant. Please take advantage of the opportunity to speak to them.
CGDent Scotland is delighted to continue to support The Canmore Trust. Professor Gibson will be present all day, and will be available to chat to everyone.
Our organisation cannot offer qualifications, but we can signpost colleagues to what we consider excellent programmes.
With us today is Professor Subir Banerji, one of our previous speakers, who is here to inform you about his internationally delivered Postgraduate Diploma Leading to Masters in Advanced Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry. This has been running in Glasgow for the last two years, and he is taking notes of interest for the third cohort starting in March ‘26.
This year he is also introducing to Scotland the Postgraduate Diploma Leading to Masters in Advanced Dental Therapy.
This is a fantastic opportunity to complete these qualifications, taught by world renowned academic and clinical teachers, without the need to travel outwith Scotland.
Subir will be in the exhibitors hall at the ADE (Academy of Dental Excellence) stand, and will be delighted to speak to anyone interested in these programmes. He will be joined by some of his current Scottish students, who can tell you of their experience. You can access further information by using the QR code in the brochure.
Hopefully you will feel enriched and enthused by the programme today, taking full advantage of the extensive breaks between lectures to network with friends and colleagues, and hopefully interact with the newest members of our community, the future of our profession.
Finally, please enjoy today, and we hope to see you next year for a day of digital dentistry.

The Caldwell Memorial Lecture
Robert Craig Caldwell
It is an honour for CGDent Scotland to be associated with a figure of the stature of Robert Craig Caldwell. Every year our final session at the Scotland Study Day is dedicated to his memory and since 2016 we have been joined by the Glasgow Dental Alumnus Association, the body which established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture.
Born in the United States but raised in Millport, Bob graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1950 and embarked on a career in dentistry that saw him return to America, initially to the Universities of Rochester and Alabama, and ultimately to California, as Dean of the School of Dentistry at UCLA. In post, he was not an ostentatious or flamboyant leader but devoted himself to ideals which he epitomised: clinical excellence and kindness in personal relationships. He encouraged the recruitment of minority and female students so that all segments of the population could be represented in the student body. In addition, he encouraged students to seek advanced training and considered all students to be his junior colleagues, understanding with great skill that in the near future his undergraduates would soon become his peers. In 1972, after just 3 years in post, Bob died aged 44 of chronic myeloid leukaemia.
His classmates at the University of Glasgow established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture and set up a trust to ensure that world-renowned speakers could be brought to Glasgow.
The event will close with the Caldwell Memorial Lecture given this year by Professor Jim McCaul
