In partnership with the West of Scotland Branch of the BDA, FGDP(UK) Scotland, is delighted to host the new Virtual Regional Presentation Evening featuring the Postgraduate Prize Event.

Finalists
We are delighted to announce that the following entrants have been selected to present their submissions:
- General Practice: Kirsty Dickson and Simon Hobson/Jill Sweeney (co presenters)
- Oral Surgery: Yasmin Aydin and Saiba Ghafoor
- Orthodontics: Joanna Kociubinska and Jillanne O'Driscoll
- Paediatrics:Lauren Crowder and Lucy Malcolm/Lauren Pengilley (co presenters)
On 12 May the finalists will present their work in the virtual final and will be judged by a panel along with an audience vote.
All finalists have the opportunity to win a postgraduate prize. The first place winner will receive £200, second place £100 and third place £50.
The event is free for any members of the dental team to attend (irrespective of age or career stage) and will qualify for CPD with CPDA pending.
Overview
To provide the dental team with an update on the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on young dentists and trainees in Scotland, showcasing young dentists and trainees’ academic and clinical work during 2020 and providing a platform for presentations on paediatrics, oral surgery, orthodontics and general practice.
Outcomes
- To understand the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on young dentists and trainees
- To understand the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on dental specialties and general practice
- To understand the ways in which clinical practice has adapted amongst a variety of dental specialties and general practice

Amandeep Bains
Amandeep graduated with a BDS(Hons) from King’s College, London in 2016. She completed her VT training in Oxford and continued onto dental core training in the North West Deanery in Restorative, OMFS and special care. She is currently completing her final year of dental core training in Cleft Lip and Palate/OMFS and soon Oral surgery and Special Care. Having recently moved to Glasgow, Amandeep is keen to explore the city and get to know the network of young dentists in the region.
April Miller
April graduated with a BDS from the University of Dundee in 2017. Having lived in Glasgow most of her life she returned to complete her DFT year in general practice working in the East End of Glasgow. She has since gone on to commence Dental Core Training across a variety of specialties including the public dental service , OMFS, oral medicine and restorative. She is currently a DCT3 working in OMFS and Orthodontics and soon Paediatrics in the west of Scotland. She joined the BDA West of Scotland Branch committee in 2021 as a representative for young and recently qualified dentists. She is delighted to act as a spokesperson for young dentists at branch council meetings.
Presentation Competition
Presentation Submissions are themed around The adaptation of dentistry to COVID-19 and submissions received feature:
- Paediatrics
- Orthodontics
- Oral surgery / OMFS / Oral Medicine
- General Practice / Public Dental Service
A shortlist of all submissions will be displayed in the next few weeks and will be available online during the event and for 3 weeks after.
How the judging will work
From our shortlist of submissions, a panel has chosen two presentations on each topic and these will be presented at the final of the virtual regional event, with each delegate having a 15 minute slot with a maximum of 20 slides.
An overall prize winner, runner up and third place winner will be selected from the eight presenters by a panel selected by the BDA West of Scotland and FGDP(UK) Scotland committees. This consists of Ashraf Ayoub, Kate Wiseman and David Cross. We will also be joined by Anurag Srinivas (Trainee representative on the BDA CCHDS)
The audience will also be able to vote and their decisions will contribute to the overall score.
