Welcome
On behalf of CGDent Scotland I am delighted to welcome you to Glasgow Science Centre for the 2024 Scotland Study Day. This event was established in 1993 under the banner of FGDP West of Scotland, but is now delivered under our new identity of CGDent Scotland, which aims to serve the dental profession for the entire country. This is the fourteenth year that we have been hosted by the Science Centre, and we hope that you have an enjoyable and informative day of CPD and networking in this fantastic facility.
Once again I would like to thank those delegates who have loyally attended this gathering over many years, and have helped grow the status and success of the day. I hope that those who are here for the first time, including the final year students from Glasgow and Dundee Dental Schools, may be inspired to join us again, and continue to find our topics and presenters relevant to the progression of their careers.
Above all, I hope that delegates will recognise the benefit of attending face to face professional meetings. Unfortunately these have been in decline following the pandemic and various fiscal restraints imposed by government. As an organisation we firmly believe that it is important for our mental health and the enjoyment of our chosen profession that we gather as a community of practice, and that the time spent in networking and conversing, sharing problems and benchmarking our own practise, is of equal value to the time spent in lectures. I hope you will all take this opportunity to fully integrate with your fellow delegates and catch up with friends.
I would also like to thank the Dental Trade and various dental organisations that have supported us today through sponsorship. The expense incurred in delivering this event is considerable, and quite an undertaking for a small non-profit organisation, so we are extremely grateful to them for enabling us to stage the day and keep the delegate cost as low as possible. Can you please take time to visit the exhibitors hall to meet our various sponsors and thank them.
Thanks are also due to Patricia de Vries, our events coordinator, for the enormous effort that she expends throughout the year in preparation for the day. It would not be possible without her. She will be delighted when today is over, and she can start thinking about Christmas preparations for her young family!
I have great pleasure in welcoming our speakers for today.
Dr Catherine Rutland will introduce the main topic by exploring the professional ethics of aesthetic dental treatment before Dr Andrew Chandrapal discusses various techniques for successful placement of anterior and posterior composites, highlighting various issues that may arise and how to prevent them.
The Caldwell Memorial Lecture will be presented by Dr Wendy Thompson, a clinical academic but also a practising primary care dentist in Cumbria, who will discuss the subject of the appropriate use of antibiotics.
I sincerely hope that you all find today interesting and worthwhile, and will consider joining us again next year when the lecture topics will include a timely update on the classification and treatment of periodontal disease by Ian Dunn, and the Caldwell Lecture will be delivered by Professor Jim McCaul on the subject of oral cancer.
Once again, thanks to all of you for your participation today.

Our study group programme in Glasgow is designed to give you an understanding of the topics and skills covered in parts 1 and 2 of the MFDS examination. Using face-to-face tutorials and online resources the group has achieved success rates of 90-100% every year since 2017. In June 2020 we went online and expanded this programme to focus on the MFDS and also to provide a platform for dentists who were keen to reinforce their skills and knowledge after months away from treating patients.
Our next Study Group will cater for candidates taking MFDS Part 1 in April 2025 and begins in February 2025. Following that, we will return in August 2025 with Part 2.

"The Perils and Pitfalls of Composite Dentistry. Problem solving direct composite restorations."
Our successes in clinical Dentistry can be measured in several ways ranging from Patient satisfaction, longevity of result through to Professional recognition. However, how does it make us feel when things do not go right? What is the correct strategy for the good of the Patient when we get the clinical result that falls under par for clinical success? How is this defined in terms of Composite Dentistry and what are the common aspects that we all struggle with? Spread over two sessions, Andrew Chandrapal will explain the concept of “Snowball Dentistry” when it comes to Anterior and Posterior Composites and how we might spot the signs during our clinical workflows, what works and what does not. How do we spot issues occurring and how might we prevent this? Andrew will show examples of success and failure and what the cardinal differences were between the two. You will be surprised at how small some of these differences are and how easy they are to overcome.
Aims
- To identify and relate to clinical complexities that can lead to unfavourable outcomes
- To be able to reflect on our clinical work and identify corrective strategies
- To apply corrective strategies with confidence leading to a reduction in failure
By the end of the presentation delegates will be able to
- Highlight where, as Clinicians, we tend to go wrong with anterior and posterior composite procedures
- To learn what we can do to minimise failure
- To become confident and aware of corrective strategies

CMI Level 7 Certificate in Leadership Coaching and Mentoring
Catherine Rutland Bio
Catherine Rutland qualifyied as a dentist from Leeds University in 1992. She did a year as a House Officer, then becoming a Senior House Officer in Newcastle before settling into general dental practice. She was a practice owner in West Berkshire for 20 years. She completed a master’s degree in medical Ethics and Law from King's College London in 2013, is a certified member of the Institute of Risk Management and has a Level 7 Certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Coaching. Catherine joined Denplan part-time in 2010 and was promoted to Clinical Director of Simplyhealth and Denplan in 2018.
Catherine Rutland leads the team that provides assistance to Denplan member dentists; helping to support them with all aspects of running their practices successfully, with particular focus on providing advice and support during clinical disputes and times of professional risk.
"The Ethics Of Aesthetics"
Catherine will be presenting an interactive presentation on ethical and legal considerations with respect to providing aesthetic and cosmetic dental procedures for patients in contemporary dental practice.
Aims: The aim of the session will be to consider the difference between morals, values and ethics. This will then lead to understanding professional ethics and how this should adapt our thinking and actions. We will explore the impact of body image and how this may affect the public’s view of treatment need and their desires.
Objectives: Exploring and understanding how we feel and think is critical for us to be able to consider treatment requests, or suggested treatment. As patient expectations alter over time, with an increased demand for more cosmetic treatment, we need to be prepared to have open conversations to make sure any treatment leads to the most appropriate outcome for the patient. The impact of body image can alter a patient’s desire for certain treatment and their expectations of what it will do for them. We need to be mindful of this in order to protect patients who are potentially vulnerable.

The Caldwell Memorial Lecture
Robert Craig Caldwell
It is an honour for CGDent Scotland to be associated with a figure of the stature of Robert Craig Caldwell. Every year our final session at the Scotland Study Day is dedicated to his memory and since 2016 we have been joined by the Glasgow Dental Alumnus Association, the body which established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture.
Born in the United States but raised in Millport, Bob graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1950 and embarked on a career in dentistry that saw him return to America, initially to the Universities of Rochester and Alabama, and ultimately to California, as Dean of the School of Dentistry at UCLA. In post, he was not an ostentatious or flamboyant leader but devoted himself to ideals which he epitomised: clinical excellence and kindness in personal relationships. He encouraged the recruitment of minority and female students so that all segments of the population could be represented in the student body. In addition, he encouraged students to seek advanced training and considered all students to be his junior colleagues, understanding with great skill that in the near future his undergraduates would soon become his peers. In 1972, after just 3 years in post, Bob died aged 44 of chronic myeloid leukaemia.
His classmates at the University of Glasgow established the Caldwell Memorial Lecture and set up a trust to ensure that world-renowned speakers could be brought to Glasgow.
The event will close with the Caldwell Memorial Lecture given this year by Wendy Thompson
"Using antibiotics sustainably"
Wendy Thompson will close the Study Day with a talk on antibiotics and how to use them sustainably.
Wendy Thompson Bio
Wendy Thompson is a clinical academic in primary dental care. Clinically, she works as a general dentist in rural Cumbria. Academically, her research at University of Manchester is about antimicrobial stewardship and urgent dental care. She is regularly invited to speak both nationally and internationally for government organisations and professional bodies.
Wendy is a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry (CGDent) and a member of its research committee. She leads on antimicrobial prescribing, resistance and stewardship for CGDent, which involves a seat on the UK Health Security Agency’s national antimicrobial resistance committee. Wendy is elected vicechair of FDI World Dental Federation's science committee and chairs its working group on preventing antimicrobial resistance and infections. She is also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
